Drink Well, Waste Less

As part of our efforts to reduce plastic waste, we have eliminated the use of single use plastic bottles and are now providing purified water in reusable bottles. This initiative has made it possible to reduce the amount of single use plastic bottle waste that was previously generated by approximately 100,000 bottles per year (actual figure for 2019).

MOTTAINAI

The spirit of "Mottainai" has been passed down in Japan since ancient times. In Japan, where it is believed that gods reside in all things, there is a belief that respecting and continuing to cherish nature and things is beautiful. HOTEL THE FLAG cherishes the spirit of "Mottainai", a word that sums up the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Respect in one word.

SustainableConstruction

HOTEL THE FLAG opened in 2018 after being converted from a building that had previously been used for a different purpose, and by doing so making the most of it.
In the past, wooden buildings were the norm in Japan, and the lifespan of these buildings were thought to be around 30 years. Despite the physical lifespan of steel frames and reinforced concrete being longer than this, there are few ideas and efforts to extend these building's economic lifespans, and scrap-and-build construction remains the standard.
HOTEL THE FLAG believes that adding new value to old things is what makes them stylish.

Respect for Nature

The entrance door is made from a single slab of solid Japanese chestnut wood, which is a sign of respect for Japan's natural resources.
This natural material changes shape depending on the temperature and humidity even after it has been made into a door, and requires regular maintenance.
If we were to think only about efficiency we could use inorganic doors, but we decided not to do so.
This approach is the symbol of HOTEL THE FLAG's sustainability efforts.

Green Key

The hotel has been certified according to strict international standards covering around 100 items set by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education, and has received the Green Key, an eco-label given to facilities that meet the standards.
HOTEL THE FLAG's environmental stance is communicated to guests from overseas, and this serves as a strong support for encouraging guests themselves to take a proactive role in environmental protection.
